In an attempt to stay afloat in a leaky boat, The Journal Register Co. closed 16 weeklies resulting in 21 reporters and editors lost jobs. The closings were split equally between the Shoreline division and Elm City chain.

State bailout for Bristol and New Britain papers?

According to the Hartford Courant, seven Connecticut state legislators from Bristol and New Britain requested a meeting with Economic Development Commissioner Joan McDonald in an attempt to save their towns’ newspapers. The owner, Journal Register company, warned earlier in November that without buyers, the newspapers would be closed after Christmas.

The Journal-Inquirer in Manchester, CT laid off Adrian Keating, Associate Editor for Photography, and staff photographer Irena Pastorello. The magazine 02138 folded today. According to mediabistro, in a statement released by 02138 owner Manhattan Media cited funding costs as too high. The final issue, already in production, will be an online-only item.
