The Eagle has landed, again.

Talk about economic recovery! New Hampshire welcomed back the Claremont Eagle Times. The newspaper shut the doors and laid everyone off in July 2009. The new owner is Sample News Group – a company that owns several local papers along the east coast. By my research, the two are perfect partners. Both entities fly very [...]

Word of the Day: Transition

June 19th, 2009 | business, industry news, layoffs/cuts/buyouts, multimedia, web | No comments

As some of you may know, I am in the midst of the longest job search in the history of long job searches. We timed a move to Boston in 2008 to coincide with the stock market crash. With such pitch-perfect timing, rather than rent a car to move north I should have bought a [...]

“There aren’t any jobs in the newspaper industry.”

Hurray Scott Kingsley for stating the fact and making my Monday a little brighter. A girl can get a complex after six months in job search mode doesn’t bring in any offers. File under misery loves company. I like when media colleagues express my reality – no jobs people, no jobs. Validation. Corroboration. Substantiation. Kingsley [...]

Two more friends and one husband laid off. The economy officially stinks. Media layoffs don’t surprise now. But architects, software engineers and my husband, the fabulous graphic designer? Enough with the layoffs. No happy nugget for me this week. If you want a glimmer of hope, check out the Newsweek article about consumer savings, confidence [...]

The Layoff Strategy

December 4th, 2008 | business, industry news, layoffs/cuts/buyouts | No comments

Within five minutes of NPR news last night, I heard about four company layoffs. Depressed beyond measure, I switched the station. Denial mode? Sure. But my issue isn’t all economic meltdown horror. Rather, I’m getting a bit agitated that all we hear about are layoffs. Is that the only solution? Are industry execs creative enough [...]

Gannett layoffs

December 3rd, 2008 | industry news, layoffs/cuts/buyouts, news coverage, VT | No comments

Gannett is in day two of what could be a 2,000+ mass layoff at all of its papers across the country. There is only one report of a lost job in Burlington so far – but that number is expected to increase. Jim Hopkins at Gannett Blog is tracking the losses here and here and [...]

We are officially in a recession. Thank you number crunchers. The National Bureau of Economic Research stated we are experiencing what is “a significant decline in economic activity spread across the economy, lasting more than a few months.” According to their calculators, the economy peaked in December 2007. The 13,748 laid off newspaper workers are [...]

State bailout for Bristol and New Britain papers?

November 26th, 2008 | CT, industry news, layoffs/cuts/buyouts | No comments

According to the Hartford Courant, seven Connecticut state legislators from Bristol and New Britain requested a meeting with Economic Development Commissioner Joan McDonald in an attempt to save their towns’ newspapers. The owner, Journal Register company, warned earlier in November that without buyers, the newspapers would be closed after Christmas. “Christopher Cooper, a spokesman for [...]

The Journal-Inquirer in Manchester, CT laid off Adrian Keating, Associate Editor for Photography, and staff photographer Irena Pastorello. Both have won awards throughout their careers with the paper. Managing Editor Chris Powell talked to CTnewsjunkie saying that relative to the paper’s 39,000 circulation the staff is still large. He also warned that more layoffs may [...]
