When I owned my own photography business, I spent a half day or so each month catching up on management trends. The habit stuck with me as a photo editor. Good managers and change agents don’t magically grow on the career tree.

In a November 2008 report, Annette Moser-Wellman says that a news company should have six competencies in order to maximize media innovation with advances in technology. Northwestern University’s Media Management Center links to the Six Competencies of the Next Generation of News Organization pdf. Teaser: one of the skills is ‘The Complete Storyteller’ including ‘visualize information and design.’ Very NPPA membership friendly.

“The six competencies in this report reflect important capabilities news organizations need to obtain or strengthen to remain viable business concerns in the face of rapid technology innovation. Technological advancements will continue to sprint ahead, bringing unforeseen challenges to the media business – especially news media. Only those who have a posture of experimentation toward technology will survive.”
