It’s been a great week of judging over 700 entries in the 2009 NPPA TV BOP contest.  I consider myself to be very lucky to get to do this every year.  Not only do I get to see some of the best of the best in storytelling, I get to share the week with some of the most talented photojournalists, editors, and reporters in the country.  And we get to use the wonderful facilities at the Poynter Institute.  Al Tompkins and his group here are THE BEST.  All I can say to everyone is THANK YOU!  Thank you for you time here, your time away from your home and family, and thank you not killing each other this week!

2009 TV BOP Judges

This morning the Photography judges are working their way through almost 100 web entries in four different categories.  There have been some very interesting discussions during this time.  As TV photographers and reporters, the judge’s have an eye for what makes good story telling.  A lot of these stories are told in a very different way then what they are used to.  Once we have all the winners posted, please read the judge’s comments to see their perspective of these categories.  

The Editing judges chose their Editor of the Year last night (but you’ll have to wait until Friday to find out who it is!!)  and are beginning their web categories today also.

Don’t forget about today’s Poynter Chat with Al Tompkins and today’s special guest, Photography judge and WSMV Reporter Terry Bulger.  They’ll be talking about how photojournalists must learn to coach reporters to write better.

In the Editor’s Side, Greg T. Johnson from WFAA was the winner with “He Saved Five Lives”.   Jason Hanson from KSTP  took 2nd with “Korean Reunion”.   And WJW’s Matt Rafferty rounded out the group with a 3rd place for “Hopewell”.

In the Photographer’s side of the contest, Ron Kabele with Texas Parks & Wildlife finished 1st with “Living History”.   Jonathan Malat from KARE finished 2nd with “What the Duck?!?!”.  ”Tea Time” from Steve Rhodes (WTHR) was 3rd.  And Noah Skinner rounded out the group with an Honorable Mention for “Size Matters”.

The Photography Judges spent the afternoon watching 62 General News stories.  After narrowing it down to 9 finalists, the real debate began.  After re-playing most of the stories for a third time, it came down to a vote.  After a tie and another vote, the winners were finally decided.

We did notice a lot of sloppy mic placement in the category.  Mic cords showing and even the wireless pack sitting on the arm of a chair that was part of the foreground of an interview.  If you’re taking the time to interview someone, spend 10 seconds to hide the mic!

Ram Guzman plays the next Editing entry

The Editing Judges have had a busy morning watching Photo Essays, shot and edited by the photographer.    Doug Burgess (WFAA) took 1st with “Invisible Voices” and Troy Hale from Michigan State University placed 2nd with “Formula Racing”

In General News Simple Effects (Editors) the judges chose not to award any winners.  They felt each of them had too many technical problems that they couldn’t overlook.

Last night, the Photography judges wrapped up the evening with 48 Hr. Feature.  Darren Durlach’s (WBFF) “The Ghosts of the Civil War” placed 1st.  Other winners include:

Today’s judging started with the Solo Video Journalist category.  Two of the nine entries were disqualified because they were also entered in other categories.  You can only enter a story in one category.  Out of the 7 left, the winners are:

3rd-”Surgery for Izzy”  David Delozier  KUSA Denver

In-Depth just wrapped up.  This was a tough category for the judges.  Lots of emotional stories. Four of the winners brought tears to more than one judge’s eyes.  (I won’t name names!)

I do want to mention that one of the finalists was BOP judge Scott Jensen.  His story was played in the other room when it was chosen as a finalist.  And he had no part in picking the winners.  He wasn’t even in the room when the finalist’s stories were watched.    

Outside picking the In-Depth winners

A step outside for some fresh air and daylight helped with deciding the winners.  After much discussion it came down to 1st & 2nd places, between “Shawn’s Long Wait”  and “Poor Little Town”.  In the end, Scott Jensen’s “Shawn’s Long Wait” was the judge’s choice for 1st place by the narrowest of margins.  Here’s how the rest of the winners stacked up.
