I arrived at Poynter on Sunday to get things organized. Wow! What great weather…too bad I had to spend so much time indoors. Anyhow, I was extremely disappointed to see that our entry numbers were down once again. This is a free contest yet it seems we haven’t done a good enough job of getting that word out. I did notice some new names this year but there are some notables missing as well (Where are you John Hyjek & Stephanie Ottjepka?!?).

My attitude did change for the better though once the actual judging began. Although numbers are down, it seems that quality is up quite a bit. Gone are the days of entries with “no nats” and “flying boxes”. The idea of basic visual storytelling is back it seems and something I greatly appreciate. I was pleasantly surprised at the entries in the Sports Feature category. Lots of great stories that weren’t your typical news content but instead each had a unique sports angle.

Overall things have been moving along quite well. Brad & Terry have been great about talking things out and it’s amazing to see how their opinions are so much alike. We’re looking forward to seeing some great stuff. And did I mention the great weather?! Stay tuned…more details as the week progresses.
